8 Tips on Staying Cool in Compression: Summer Tips for Lipedema
Practical tips for those of us who swell in the heat. And I have resources!
It's sweltering this summer, and it can be really tough for those of us with lipedema to stay cool. Wearing compression garments helps with lipedema, but it makes staying cool and comfortable even harder. I know how hard it is because I go through it, too.
Wearing compression in the summertime is crucial, because the heat triggers physiological factors such as sweating, increased blood flow, reduced lymphatic function, and even an inflammatory response, which causes more swelling and even fluid leakage through our skin.
Here are some easy tips and fun ways to stay cool and comfy in this heat:
Material Matters: Try breathable fabrics like microfiber, nylon, and spandex designed to be lightweight and breathable. Choose compression garments with moisture-wicking properties to keep your skin dry by drawing sweat away from the body.
Proper Fit: Compression should be snug but not too tight, so make sure your compression fits well. If possible, visit a medical supply store to try on different compression garments. This can help you find the right fit and fabric that feels comfortable for you.
Try ankle-length or capri garments: Keeping your feet uncovered helps you stay cooler, and because lipedema typically doesn't cause swelling in the feet, you can skip compression in that area. Capris may also be better if you don’t swell in your lower legs.
Layer strategically: Wear thin, light layers over your compression garments, like a loose, airy dress or skirt. I love this look, which allows for better airflow while keeping you cool in hot weather. Wearing light-colored cotton or linen fabrics is even better for keeping you from overheating.
Wear neutral-colored compression: Because black attracts heat!
Dampen or wet your compression: If you’re really overheated, try this! It will cool you down if you’re going out into the heat. But please don’t do this if you have skin issues, open wounds, or dressings in place.

Get in the water: My favorite part of summertime is swimming outdoors. Being in water gives us natural compression, and swimming is the best exercise. Plus, you will stay cool!
Staying cool in the summer while wearing compression garments is possible! Remember to drink water and listen to your body—it's all about feeling comfy and having fun in the sun!
